$150M XRP Theft Linked to LastPass Breach
A theft of $150 million worth of XRP from Chris Larsen, co-founder of Ripple, is linked to a security breach in the password manager LastPass, according to a civil forfeiture complaint filed by U.S. law enforcement on March 6. The complaint indicates that Larsen's private keys were stored in LastPass, which experienced a significant security breach in 2022. Hackers exploited this vulnerability to access Larsen's keys and stole XRP tokens valued at $150 million at the time of the theft, which is now worth over $600 million. Larsen confirmed the incident in January, noting that the hack only affected his personal accounts and did not compromise Ripple's corporate wallets. It is estimated that cryptocurrency losses related to the LastPass security breach could reach at least $250 million by May 2024.
