Massive Crypto Theft and Losses

Changpeng Zhao, CEO of the Binance exchange, announced that 27.6% of the assets stolen in the March attack are no longer traceable. Meanwhile, 84.5% of the stolen Ethereum has been converted into Bitcoin. According to Zhao, cybercriminals used tools such as mixers like Wasabi, the Tornado Cash platform, and cross-border exchanges to distribute much of the stolen funds into untraceable wallets. This attack, the largest in cryptocurrency history with a total theft of $1.5 billion, has resulted in only 3.8% of the stolen assets being frozen so far. The attack has been attributed to the North Korean Lazarus group, which infiltrated a wallet developer’s system and inserted malicious code. Binance is working with international investigative agencies and offering rewards for tracking the stolen funds to recover the assets.
